to help articulate high-contrast yet intimate songs about subjects like humanity, struggle, and contradiction. It's a little surprising then that her third album,
You & i are Earth
, takes on a mellower, more even-keeled tone on songs that are full of gratitude and affection. Essentially a tribute to both her adopted home of Ireland and her partner, it was produced by
John "Spud" Murphy
(
Black Midi
,
Goat Girl
Lankum
) and features performances by Irish singer/songwriter
Anna Mieke
Cormac MacDiarmada
), and
Crash Ensemble
Kate Ellis
Caimin Gilmore
, who help construct an earthy, textured palette with instruments like clarinets, strings, bouzouki, and harmonium.
Mieke
brings the titular Agnes to life on the folklore-inspired "Agnes," one of the album's rare anxious, driving tracks, if one still rooted in acoustic stringed instruments and muted drumming. Another example of an uneasy entry is "Donegal," a song about trying to find a home somewhere new ("Donegal, please look after me"). However,
more appropriately opens with the sounds of the seaside, adding light orchestral instruments before setting the stage with the half-whispered "Talk to Me" ("When I cry, you say I taste like the sea/This warmth, this is how it should be"). The rest of the songs here quietly celebrate safety and home, including "Big & Wild," which has more in common with the opener than one might assume by its title. The album's overriding ethos is expressed more clearly on tracks like "I Reach for You in My Sleep" and closer "The Rest of Our Lives," whose warm, layered harmonies, nimble fingerpicking, and gentle background shimmer evoke and encourage sweet dreams. ~ Marcy Donelson
