The series of albums by the
Czech Chamber Philharmonic Orchestra Pardubice
(some streaming services have this as the
Czech Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra
, but this regional group has nothing to do with the
Czech Philharmonic
) devoted to the composer
Paul Wranitzky
, and this 2025 release made classical best-seller lists early that year.
Wranitzky
was a key figure in Viennese musical life in the 1790s, and he conducted the premiere of
Beethoven
's
Symphony No. 1 in C major, Op. 21
. His works are a varied lot, but this album contains some of the best. All the works here are from the 1790s, and in many passages, one might take the music for
Haydn
's, with the sole proviso that
did it first. The
Symphony in D major
in the middle shows the typical
pattern of a weighty Adagio introduction in the first movement. However,
was more than a mere imitator; hear the unique trio of the Minuet in the
Symphony in E flat major ("Jagd-Sinfonie")
. Best of all is the
Symphony in C minor, Op. 31
, optimistically subtitled the "
Grande Symphonie caractéristique pour la paix avec la République Françoise
" ("
Grand Characteristic Symphony for Peace with the French Republic
"). This is a programmatic work like so many others in the last decade of the 18th century, but
cleverly integrates the program with a traditional four-movement symphonic form. Conductor
Marek ¿tilec
adds energy to this music that was totally unknown to his players, and the final work could certainly be added to other symphonic programs. The sound from the House of Music in Pardubice is reasonable, and one awaits further items in the series;
was a prolific composer, indeed. ~ James Manheim
