Our dream of reaching higher states of civility, equity, security, peace, and good health fades as the century progresses. A wealth of information shows that resource depletion, overcrowding, environmental degradation, economic disruptions, and all their attendant crises are irreversible and intensifying. Soon, we will face an experience we understand in the abstract but ignore as a reality: the rapid down-sizing of the human species by the forces of nature.
