Saved by Hassewiets and nursed back to health at the mission, Wambu begins to learn more about Jesus.
Yet the mystery and magic of the old witchcraft die hard in his heart. Wambu finds himself torn between the compassion of the new faith and the dark tyranny of the old ways. A language barrier still prevents him from explaining the plight of the captives left behind in Kitoe.
Sensing his inner turmoil, a band of distant cannibal relatives plays on his lingering fear and superstition, attempting to force him to lead an attack on the mission. Wambu narrowly escapes and helps to thwart the assault. At last, he is able to plead for help for the children still in captivity.
