Tom Richmond, after a disastrous marriage, falls in love with one of his black students who has been raped by policemen. Their life together during the period of draconian Apartheid laws is described, as well as some interesting personalities Tom comes across while working in that outlandish time. I have drawn on my memories of that “normality” as it appeared to those of us who were there. The Bantu Education system as experienced by Tom, the teacher, is explored through the incidents that happen and the people he works with, both black and white, in a Soweto college. Modern readers might enjoy it if they enjoy reading fantasy novels, as nowadays these things could well seem to be purely a figment of the author’s imagination! They are not, however, purely imaginary …ABOUT THE AUTHORI have lived in South Africa all my life except for my childhood in Northern Rhodesia and a brief sojourn in England, where I realized that I also loved my own country and could not leave it. I have been an English teacher in a variety of different types of schools. The most important contribution I have made to the world is to have equipped thousands of black high school students with proficiency in English; now an indispensable life-skill. In 1976 I was one of six or seven white teachers employed as teachers in “deep” Soweto and I was present there on the June the 16th uprising of students. This book is partly from my memories of that time, and partly a story about love against tremendous odds. It is historical fiction, set against a background of political and cultural truth, so it may sometimes cut rather close to the bone. It is also “adult” fiction because it is about lovers, and is intended to be honest. I think that the real involvement of the reader makes this book a riveting page-turner. It will be wonderful if it is being read at the same time as the next June 1976 anniversary. May it receive your favourable opinion.
