Lucy and her friend Hoani are aiming to study at university, but the loss of lucy's family members and a near fatal accident on Franz Joseph Glacier for Hoani, sets them on a different journey to their new life and love.
Hoani's sister Reka intends to train to be a Nanny in Auckland; But her life is in danger, after a chance encounter with school friend Toby, who has members of his brother's gang in his car with him. When the gang learn of toby's intention to marry Reka, they insist they also "own" (and intend to rape) her. Reka is smuggled to safety in Auckland, while Toby disappears to a new life, with a new identity (Kiwa) in the deep south. A nationwide search by gangs eventually locates them both. Reka is kidnapped and taken south ( her friend Mahina is accidently brought along too) for the confrontation with Kiwa.
