A spiritual successor to A Christmas Carol, Dickens' The Chimes follows a messenger, Trotty Veck, whose common life becomes extraordinary on one winter night. Like Scrooge before him, Chimes' protagonist has supernatural visions of times past, present, and future. Veck faces the choice between personal gain and the wellbeing of society at large.
