In the summer of 1521, a handful of Spanish soldieia were holding the unfinished citadel of Pamplona, against an invading army of the allied French and Navarese. A cannon shot from the assailants dislodged a fragment of stone which wounded the left leg of a young Spanish officer, while the ball itself broke his other leg. He fell, and, as he had been the soul of the defence, the fortress fell with him. The conquerors honoured the bravery of their gallant foe; they dressed his wounds, and carried him gently to his home not very far distant, and there set him free.
