This book purports to show that the pain caused by oppression is shared by many more groups; is less understood, and is less accepted. In the short story of Mae, the details of her life are fully exposed. The trials of her Albino family and the horrendous things that happened to them, all helped to make Mae the type of woman she has become. Mae's life is full of torment. Only brief episodes of joy are intermingled with the sadness she experiences so often. This novel will demonstrate another side of her - never known by others and not even known herself. Unfortunately, Mae is a former user of drugs. She hides this pain well, but some of the lingering scares still show. However, for all the awkwardness of Mae's life, she is a loving woman, who wants what others want - a chance to survive. The suspense opens when Mae is given twenty dollars by a stranger that she has met outside of a bar. For the first time in her life though she has lived a life of despair, she has finally found an oasis of support. The support is found in a bar called The Quiet Side - a seedy place, in a seedy part of St. Louis, Missouri during the year 1942. Yes, she finds solace in a bar.
