Excerpt from Letters From a Young Painter Abroad to His Friends in England, Vol. 1: Adorned With Copper PlatesIs, much more extenfive, par ticular, and exaét, than any that has before appeared 3 gave the firft occafion to the thought of making any of thefe letters public. In confequence of which, it was in tended to publifh only' thole which defcribe its prefent fituation and circumfta'nces, and the Antiquities found therein 5 together with the previous defcription of Mount Ve and relation of all the Eruptions which have happened, particularly that by which this City Was overwhelmed. But the favourable opi nion of Thofe, to whom fome of the other letters had been occafionally communi cated, encouraged the Editor to compile a fmall Volume, rather than apamphlet.
