This is a biography by Maud Howe Elliott, Florence Howe Hall, and Laura E. Richards about their mother, Julia Ward Howe. It was originally published in 1915, and won the Pulitzer prize for Biography in 1917. Julia Ward Howe was an American poet and author, social activist (particularly for women's suffrage), and abolitionist. She is also known for writing the poem Battle Hymn of the Republic, also known as Mine Eyes Have Seen the Glory. During her life, Howe founded the New England Women's Club, the New England Woman Suffrage Association, was co-leader of the American Woman Suffrage Association, and was president of the Association for the Advancement of Women. Since her death, she has been honoured with a postage stamp, inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, and the National Women's Hall of Fame, as well as having several buildings named after her.
