An eccentric and superannuated art detective discovers a long-missing painting smashed and thrown out beside a highway. Against a background of climatic disaster, with a permanent sandstorm a mile deep forming in the desert, C John Mackinaw finds himself entangled with two cults of the Latter Days. When C John disappears, his daughter Zack is called in to clean up the mess.
