During the nineteenth and the early part of the twentieth centuries, the erection of nearly one thousand covered bridges was recorded in New England's archives. However, the ravages of time, storms, floods, neglect, and vandals have reduced the remaining historic, authentic covered bridges to fewer than two hundred. While the majority of these bridges are in the states of Vermont and New Hampshire, wonderful examples of covered bridges can be found in all six of the New England states. When Jeffrey Blackman set out to capture New England's covered bridges on film, his goal was to create not just a pretty, postcard-perfect picture but to tell a story about each bridge's history and usage throughout the years. He carefully studied each bridge from many angles before shooting, and took pains to show the environment surrounding each bridge in its photo. A special section about trusses explains the carefully engineered design of the bridges, and how and why these massive, carefully built matrixes of wood hold the bridges together. Covered Bridges of New England will appeal to the thousands of visitors who come to New England each summer and fall to see the bridges and want to take home a little memento from their trip.
