This book presents recent developments in the epidemiology and natural history of the early stages of cancer of the uterine cervix, vulva and vagina, and on significant advances in treatment procedures. Electrodiathermy, cryosurgery, and more recently carbon dioxide laser have proven to be appropriate tools to destroy the atypical epithelia without mutilating the organs affected. The most important single factor involved in success of these techniques is a meticulous pre-treatment assessment of the patient based on skilful colposcopic examination to determine the full extent of any lesion. This can only be done by a physician thoroughly experienced in colposcopic diagnosis and with complete understanding of the histogenesis of intraepithelial neoplasia.
