The study reads 18th century drama in the context of two diverging concepts, agonality and philantropy. In an in-depth analysis of dramatic texts by Goethe, Schiller, Voltaire, Diderot and the popular sentimental comedy, the study shows how enlightenment tries to prevent the violent escalation of social conflicts by balancing agonality with the sentimental ideas of moral sense and gentle kindness.
