Around the 1980s, a new generation of writers was born. Straddling several cultures, aware of the openness of African societies to the modern world and the impact of unbridled globalization on them, these "Afro-Parisian" novelists (as BENNETA Jules Rosette calls them) or "Migritude" novelists (as JACQUES Chevrier calls them) lay no claim to a cultural identity based on race or geographical origin. Their approach is part of a new identity space, halfway between Africanness and Frenchness. In their works, these writers portray characters confronted with the dramatic problems of immigration, against which they are determined to fight. For this reason, their works bear the hallmarks of multiculturalism and integration. They call themselves "world-literature" to demonstrate their determination to transcend the cultural, ethnic and geographical barriers imposed by history.
