After the death of her father, Jesse Kincaid's mother suggests moving to a new state to outrun the bad memories made in Utah and Colorado. Jesse agrees, believing her mother will make good on a promise to become closer to her.
Once in Lakin, Kansas, Jesse takes a job working on a farm owned by a gruff Cuban man named Brooklyn. As Jesse ingratiates herself into her new life, secrets come to light about who her mother really is.
