An excerpt from Ursula wakes up in a sweat. Her dream - or rather nightmare - was about Daddy Bear locked in the back of the ranger's truck at Tuolumne Lodge. In the dream, Ursula and her friends, Kakul the Raven and Brave Marmot, watch in tears as Daddy Bear is taken away. It takes Ursula a minute to realize it is just a nightmare as she is assured by the snores from Daddy Bear next to her. 'How close we came to losing Daddy,' she shudders. This nightmare repeats once or twice a week, even though Daddy was tagged and taken by the rangers over a month ago. Ursula is not sure if she should tell Mommy about her nightmares or get help from someone else in Bear Town. She also wonders if bears can have nightmares when they hibernate because that would make for a very long winter. Ursula arises and walks past the radio that Daddy Bear uses to monitor the movements of the park rangers. She hears a voice mention that the High Sierra camps are opening, including the Vogelsang camp which is where Daddy was saved by Billy. "Billy will be heading out today with a pack train of tourists," thinks Ursula. "What a fun trip for them, but I wonder if these riders even know that Flo and Mo trade jokes and that their 'hee-haws' are really laughs? They probably just ride, watching the beautiful country, and don't know that all of the pack horse grunts and neighs are really words in Animal." Ursula laughs when she remembers the joke, 'What do pack horses speak? Animule.'
