Not long after, police reported that a local farmer named Richard Read confessed to Dorothy's rape and murder. But his arrest was not enough for the citizens on Northwestern Kansas. Removing him from his jail cell in Cheyenne County, a mob bound and hanged Read from a tree in what would be the state's final lynching.
