Set in the year 1907, the story follows Mercy Winslow, who is the daughter of murdered chemist, Edwin Winslow. When Mercy begins investigating his death, she discovers information that makes her question the innocence of his research. Meanwhile, she begins receiving lessons from her new tutor, Brice Kaiser, who is one of the men under the watch of Cohen Emerson. Known by those in the town as a compassionate philanthropist, Cohen has a multitude of secrets hidden beneath his calm demeanor. As more comes to light regarding Edwin's research and Brice's past, Mercy unveils the shocking truth involving several who reside in the town of Wrathbury - specifically the men under Cohen's watchful eye.
