Abt, franz, a German composer, born at Eilenburg, Saxony, December 22, 1819. He passed his early life in theolog ical study, but later devoted himself to music and became director at Zurich. After eleven years there, he was appointed second musical director at the Brunswick court theatre, and was promoted to be first by the Grand Duke in 1855. He has Com posed for orchestra, piano and voice, but it is mainly for his vocal compositions that he is known. As a composer of two and four-part. Songs he has been very successful. He visited the United States in 1872. He died March 3rst, 1885, in Wiesbaden.
