NOTE'S FROM THE JOURNAL OF CAPTAIN NEWTON MAY 4th, 1915 DE BLONDER FRANCE Today we saw our first action here at trench six. Two Germans must have got lost and with their hands high in the air and above their heads, they came walking towards us calling, "Tommies, we give up don't shoot please!" At first I thought it was a trap or maybe an ambush, but after an hour went by and those poor sods were still standing there in the midday sun, which was bloody hot today, I sent Sergeant Swift and Rifleman Simms over to them and we took our first prisoners of the war. I got three of my lads to march them back to our HQ, a half mile behind us. Major Kitts sent a note back with the lads saying, 'well done Newton keep it up' so today was a good day for me and the lads. Still cannot work out how the two Germans came so close without us seeing them until the last minute so have sent a patrol out to check around.
