Dusty Wilton is a normal teenage boy, or so he thinks. But one day near Christmas he gets a weird letter that he doesn't know what to do with. He thinks that it would be foolish to believe that it was true. But for some reason it stays with him. So he takes a job and small apartment in the only human city in this world, Shoretown.In a different part of Shoretown two Elven brothers have also made a temporary home for themselves. They had been tasked by the Creator to watch over the other people in the land, and they took that seriously. But they find the humans odd, and unpredictable, and are unsure how to help them best.Dusty soon hears about the Elven brothers, and has a feeling that they know how he is going to get home. But fearing the answer to be one that he doesn't want he avoids them for as long as he can. But after being punished for a crime that he didn't do, the younger of the two brothers finds him. And tells them that he had been looking for Dusty for months.
