The basis for the plot of the play was the criminal wife Catherine and Nicholas Guymer, which Tolstoy found in 1897. But even before that the writer had some ideas and images embodied in the drama "The Living Corpse". In a diary entry dated February 9, 1894 read: "Clearly occurred to the story, which would have put two people: one - dissolute, confused, fallen to contempt only from kindness, the other - apparently pure, honorable, respected by coldness, not love. " This entry is valid, researchers associated with the creative history of "living corpse." Tolstoy's idea to oppose these two people are not embodied in the story, as suggested by the writer, and in the drama.
