The idea started in high school during a regular hangout with my friends. I noticed that two girls who were visiting us that day weren't laughing at the jokes I'd been telling. Puzzled, I asked one of my friends if the girls were pregnant. "No, they're not pregnant-they're deaf," she replied. At first, I thought she was joking, but one of my other classmates confirmed it. Later that day, the two girls sent a note to me asking if I could write down what I'd said that had made everyone laugh. Though I didn't mention in the note I sent back to them that I'd asked if they were pregnant, I did include a couple of things I said that were funny. The one-page joke I sent to those girls that day was the beginning of my sit-down comedy book. Many more notes followed as they kept on asking for more. These girls would later give me a name: "the Funny Hand of God." I adopted the name quickly. It was better than the nickname my friends at school called me. You don't want to know.
