The spirit in which the following pages are offered to the public is not one in which any claims are made for women, as against men neither equality nor superi ority, nor any quality the insistence upon which tends to provoke the desire to con trovert or to condemn, is made the basis of what is hoped will be regarded as a sane and temperate exposition of the views of many women and perhaps more men. The arguments in favour of extending the franchise in any given direction being perfectly familiar to all who have con sidered the political aspect of public affairs, it has not been thought necessary to dwell upon them in connection with the present demand of duly qualified women to partici pate in the election of the representatives of the people. For, briefly, all the reasons that have in the past been advanced in favour of extending the franchise to men.
