ENGLAND, 1066. The new year brings winter storms and bitter omens. The Viking kingdoms are restless. The Welsh and the Scots hone their blades in their wild fastnesses. The Duke of Normandy looks out across the Narrow Sea to the land that could make him a king. And England's king lies dying, leaving an empty throne and a nation divided. Wulfred of Ellasham is the son of a warrior and ancient custom dictates that he must follow his father and take up the sword for whichever lord inherits England's crown. But he cares little for ancient custom, nothing for kings and even less for the war-fame he is expected to crave. Wulfred cares only for the people of his village and the land they live by. He wakes from the great winter feast burdened by the weight of an unwelcome destiny.
