Chromium is a highly toxic metal ion and considered as a priority pollutant released from various chemical industries like electroplating mixing activities, smelting, battery manufacture and tanneries etc.Effluents have been excessively released into the environment due to rapid industrialization and have created a global concern. Unlike organic waste, Chromium effluents are non biodegradable and they can be accumulated in living tissues causing various diseases and disorders. The adsorption of chromium ions from aqueous solutions by two adsorbents viz. fly ash and saw dust was studied under a batch mode. Factors affecting the adsorption characteristics such as pH, contact time, initial chromium concentration and adsorbent dosage were studied.
