It was 1963 and after eleven years of severe physical abuse, a miracle happens. Twenty-seven-year-old Carol has a slim chance to escape. Scared to death because she knows that getting caught mean the worse beating of her life, or maybe worse. Luckily, Carol and her five young sons do manage to escape with the help of her sister and her husband. Driving for three days and nights, the three adults and eight children under the age of ten, arrive in California. Carol has no work experience nor does she have a driver's license, but she does find a job right away but at minimum wage of $1.00 an hour. She walks to save the bus money. She finds stores in out of the way places that sell food cheaper than the supermarket. Every evening after dinner, she cooks again for the next evenings dinner. The food is not fancy but is good and the children never went hungry. Life for Carol was difficult but she didn't mind. Compared to the life she'd left behind, live now was wonderful. Every day was better then the day before. At least now, they could all rest peacefully at night secure in the knowledge that they would be attacked while they slept.
