Jake is full of self-loathing after the death of his girlfriend in a traffic accident. He finds refuge in heavy drinking that allows him to sleep. Kate is a brilliant scientist who is the victim of a verbally abusive father who demeans women. She has no self-confidence out of the lab and is easily manipulated by others. Together they find a way to heal.
