Socioeconomic Status and Adolescent Well-being

Social scientists and sociologists used the term socio-economic status to describe the position of an individual in a society. It includes both social and economic status of an individual in a society. When the socio-economic level of a family is analyzed, household income,level of education, orientation and occupation are analyzed. As well as the combined income and individual characteristic of the household members are also analyzed. Elizabeth H. baker Define socioeconomic status as a measure of one's combined economic and social status and it also positively associated with better health. Socio- Economic status is a multidimensional concept and most researchers agree that it includes income of family, education of parents and their occupational status (Bradly and Crowyn,). In this study three common elements of socio-economic status, education, income and occupation have been taken. Socio-economic inequalities are an important topic. The socio-economic status of family affects adolescent's lives. Research indicates that SES is an essential factor that affects quality of life of children, youth and families. Family is the first social institution where child is born and brought up by his/her parents and other family members. Family functionality can affect the development and wellbeing of the individual in term of emotionally, mentally and physically.
