Salzburg Festival Opening Concert 2009: Schubert/Webern/Strauss [Blu-ray]

The offbeat concert in this classical music performance release actually constituted the opening set for the 2009 Salzburg Festival, programmed by Nikolaus Harnoncourt. The theme was an unusual and intriguing one: classical pieces selected for their ability to profile and explore the elements of dance in Austrian music. Selections, all performed by the Vienna Philharmonic, include: Franz Schubert and Anton Webern's "6 Deutsche Tänze"; Josef Strauss's "Frauenherz Polka op. 166," "Delirien Waltz op. 212" and "Pêle-mêle Polka op. 161"; and Schubert's "Symphony No. 9 in C Major D 944 'Great'." Harnoncourt conducts.
