Over the course of a summer, I spent four months in rest stoops across America's heartland. I gathered stories from 12 exceptional people. Stories of courage, humor, heartbreak, and anger. These are their stories. Setting up a little table and a homemade sign, I sat and waited for them to approach me. Using a computer and a tape recorder, I took down their stories and put them in this book.
