The Emperor Augustus dies on 19 August AD 14, leaving an account of his achievements, normally referred to as the
Res Gestae
of Augustus, to be inscribed on his Mausoleum at Rome; this has been almost completely preserved in Latin or Greek paraphrase on inscriptions found in Turkey. This edition of the
, corrected since its first issue in 1969, enables a-level and undergraduate students to understand this important historical source. The Latin test and facing-page translation are supplemented with an introduction surveying the literary characteristics and historical value of the work, and explaining Augustus constitutional position, for which his own words are an important testimony.
