This volume is the product of the NATO Advanced Research Workshop on Radiation Inactivation of Bioterrorism Agents, held in March 2004 in Budapest, Hungary. Gazso (National Center for Public Health, National Research Institute for Radiobiology and Radiohygiene, Hungary) and Ponta ("Horia Hulubei" National Institute for Physics and Engineering, Romania) present 21 papers from the workshop, which include contributions from radiation experts; facility operators; and experts on process control, safety, and dosimetry. Among the topics included are radiation safety principles and requirements at gamma- and electron-radiation facilities, dosimetry systems for radiation processing, process control of radiation treatment, dose setting procedures for radiation sterilization, the application of radiation chemistry to radiation technology, dose modifying factors, agents for biological weapons, the concept of the deployable (molecular) biological laboratory, irradiation decontamination of postal mail and high-risk luggage, differential polymerase chain reaction diagnostic of orthopoxviruses, inactivation of biological warfare agent simulants by ionizing radiation, inactivation of biological threat agents with nonionizing radiation, ionizing radiation inactivation medically relevant viruses, and Portuguese case studies of bioterrorism prevention.
