This set begins with two of its strongest numbers, a pair of selections that greatly benefit from the inclusion of tenor saxophonist . Unfortunately, is only on one other number ( ) and, at first, the other performances miss his presence. However, 's melodic and bluesy style is pleasing in its own fashion, and repeated listenings make it easier to warm up to his approach toward playing straight-ahead .
