Louisiana supplied 10,000 troops to the fight in the War with Mexico, a war which was fueled by the aggressive expansion westward of American settlers after the Louisiana Purchase.
After it was all over, Mexico ceded a vast landmass to the United States stretching from Texas to California.
With photography being in its infant stages, few images of soldiers were taken, much less still exist today of the war time period. Most of the portraits of Louisiana soldiers in this work were taken in later years.
