The definition of a boarding pass is widely known but the item itself is generally tossed aside. A meaningless permission slip that temporarily grants a guest rentorship of a select space on an aircraft. I found a fascinating aspect that makes boarding passes unique, and a recycling concept hidden in them. The machine I designed generates and operates on human carelessness. The concept of personalized trash on a global scale could hold people accountable of their own waste; as their name would be on it. The boarding pass itself is migrating to digital delivery, assuming the reasoning is to reduce the amount of wasted paper, but I admire what it stands for in its' physical form. It is a personalized piece of trash. It's a window into the large scale waste that is paid little attention to, with the roll of a shoulder it's left behind for someone else to pick up and dispose of properly. The condition, the location, or might there be gum smashed between it? All of these things help identify the subtle characteristics of a passenger. Pay close attention to the quality of each boarding pass. Imagine a small city with personalized trash. Would we clean up after ourselves?
