Diabetes mellitus is the fourth cause of mortality in the world, after cardiovascular disease, cancer and muscular-skeletal disease .Diabetes mellitus, is incurable and leads to death due to the long-term complications. This study was undertaken using qualitative approach ,to explore the patients' perceptions about self-management of diabetes. The findings show that family-based strategies are more successful in the management of diabetes in Indonesia than are programs focusing on the diabetic person alone. In addition, most participants initially did not have adequate knowledge about self-management. This situation influenced their capability to manage the disease. Hence, family involvement is important as a strategy for developing diabetes self-management education. Therefore, this study clearly highlights family issues as a contributing factor in achieving better self-management in the Indonesian context.
