In 1916 the Saturday Evening Post began publishing a column about a young man named "Obvious Adams" who was a fictional caricature of an up and coming advertising man who's deminor was so simple and guileless in his thinking that he was considered brilliant in spite of himself. The column soon gained popularity for its plain wisdom and straightforward advice. The story of Adams was eventually published in book and used as a primer for new advertising executives.
