RENNER Studies on New Religions is an initiative supported by the Danish Research Council for the Humanities. The series was established to publish books on alternative spiritual movements from a wide range of perspectives. The books will appeal to an international readership of scholars, students, and professionals in the study of religion, theology, the arts, and the social sciences. It is hoped that this series will provide a proper context for scientific exchange between these often competing disciplines. The 1990s have shown a rapid development of religious interest in Eastern Europe. The political causes and the sociological responses are the main themes in this volume, containing 15 presentations by leading authorities on new religions in contemporary Europe, both East and West, in addition to reactions to them. Composed of highlights from a 1993 International Conference held at the London School of Economics, these lectures present an objective approach to the study of new religions and provide and an invaluable source of information about the religious landscape of the new Europe.
