Whether the Middle Ages took up old myths again or forged new ones, they rarely escaped a confrontation with Christianity. Sometimes the Church asserted its supremacy over myth while using myth; sometimes laypeople developed their own spirituality or an ideology opposed to the Christian viewpoint.
