In a future world where days are short and the nights seem like forever, Rex Fear works the slums of the last human metropolis on Earth as a Tracer-a mix between a private eye and finder of lost souls. Outside the high walls of Golgotha mega-city trillions of demonic fiends, evolved from once harmless bacteria in the long nights, rule the rest of the planet, ever trying to get inside and devour the remains of mankind. But Rex is no ordinary private eye. He's the sole surviving member of a cybernetically enhanced United Nations special ops battalion created to fight the Night Fiends, also known as the Hell-Raised. Forbidden from using the full suite of his military grade cybernetic implants as a condition of living within Golgotha, Rex works the lawless Mourning Ring taking jobs the city's iron-handed theocracy won't touch, often resulting in severe injury and little pay. When a new Tracer job comes his way, one that pays a small fortune but involves working for the Church that governs Golgotha, Rex is skeptical but signs on, as the rewards for its completion are much too good to turn down. Before long he finds himself strapped to a speeding freight train bound straight for Hell. The tactical software witch implanted in his brain by the UN to control his cybernetic combat rig is laughing her head off the whole way . . .
