Hunt and Mullins, both affiliated with the University of Dayton, offer an episodic, rather than comprehensive, history of moral education in American schools, especially public schools. They deal with selected periods, movements, and individuals from the time of colonial Massachusetts to the present-day character education movement, such as Horace Mann's common school movement, the 19th-century parochial school, the Educational Policies Commission, and Kohlberg's stages of moral development.
