Middle Eastern Lectures is a biennial publication which disseminates outstanding lectures delivered by visitors to the Moshe Dayan Center at Tel Aviv University. In this issue, Farhad Kazemi and Olivier Roy explain Khatami's surprise election as president of Iran. Fred Halliday compares Middle Eastern nationalisms, J.J.G. Jansen compares Middle Eastern fundamentalisms, and Gudrun Kramer looks behind the slogan of "applying" Islamic law. The Western understanding of Islam is the theme of a special series on Orientalisms, with contributions by British scholars Alastair Hamilton, Robert Irwin, and John MacKenzie.
