Forty years ago I departed St Louis on a company trip to San Francisco with a stop at Denver, where she boarded and chose to sit next to me. We struck up a conversation that could have lasted a lifetime. Before we deplaned she gave me her address and phone number, asking me to call her after I had finished my business at the Shell Oil lab. I called the next day at 5 PM. She invited me to her apartment to discuss a place to dine. We visited a club in Jack London Square, Oakland, CA. We dined and danced all evening. When I returned to St Louis I wrote her a letter telling her I had enjoyed every moment of our time together. I thought I did not receive a reply to that letter. One year later, packing to move to England, I discovered what happened to her letter. The impact of that discovery caused me to suppress memory of our one enchanted evening for forty years...
