This table is designed to work in two positions, which is unusual and useful. Against a wall in an entryway it is a console, holding keys, post, and a lamp at 31.5 in high. Behind a sofa it becomes a sofa table, and that extra height is what makes the second use work, because a table that sits below the back of a sofa looks like a mistake. At 39.4 in wide by 13.8 in deep it suits both positions. Narrow enough not to intrude in a hallway, long enough to span a meaningful stretch of sofa back, and shallow enough that a lamp placed on it does not lean out over the seating. Each shelf carries up to 44 lb, which covers books, baskets, or a stack of magazines.Steel and glass bring the assembled table to 30.4 lb. Glass shelves are the reason a piece this size stays visually quiet, letting the floor and the wall show through rather than presenting a solid mass in a room that may already be short of space. Black steel is left visible as the structure, which gives the table a defined line rather than the softness a wooden console would bring.
