is a selection of extracts from the unpublished journals of Lewis Harcourt. Harcourt was the constant companion and confidential secretary of Sir William Harcourt, his father, who was home secretary and chancellor of the exchequer in the last three of Gladstone’s four Liberal governments. This journal extracts, written during the years 1880 to 1895, document the political, social, and personal thoughts of a young politician.
