Set between 1927 and 1933, this continuation of the Pericourt family adventures begins with the funeral of the Patriarch Marcel, a massive ceremony attended by everyone who is anyone in Paris, or at least strives to be. However, things are not looking too good for Madeleine, heir to the vast family estate. There are too many moving parts in her life: her brother Édouard’s suicide, a disfigured hero, the incarceration of her swindling ex-husband, and the death of her father, all of it adds on to her son Paul’s delicate situation, a seven-year-old boy who has just suffered a horrible mishap. Thus, at this vulnerable time in her life, Madeleine must put herself at the helm of a financial institution with the help of a very ambiguous and resentful agent, a greedy and shady uncle with evil intentions, and a young lover with pretenses of a journalist. And all this within an environment full of secrets, betrayals, blackmail, and tricks in which fortune seekers and unscrupulous politicians thrive without control, oblivious to the imminent stock market crash and unaware of the war that is looming over Europe.
