In the depths of the African bush a mission hospital is seized with a creeping sense of doom and foreboding.
Things are starting to go wrong - the malign monsoon has come early, independence is just round the corner, a new recruit has turned out to be a twisted predator, and the hospital's treasured theatre sister has died on the operating table after a mysterious illness.
